The Problem
High-quality curricula and instructional materials are perhaps the most powerful levers to improve academic achievement, but very few school districts employ them. An Aspen Institute study estimated curriculum to be 40 times more impactful on student outcomes than class size, yet as few as 1 in 10 teachers are using high quality instructional materials.
The most common public school curricula are based on repudiated education fads, and they often promote a politically biased worldview. School boards have the authority to establish district-specific curricular guidelines that require content rich, high quality instructional materials, but very few do so, and even fewer hold administrators accountable for their faithful implementation.
The Solution
School Boards for Academic Excellence helps school board members solve these problems. SBAE and our allied service providers offer support at all three steps in the curriculum process:
- Auditing an Existing or Proposed Curriculum and Materials
- Curriculum Mapping
- Curriculum Review
- Recommending and Vetting an Alternative Curriculum or Materials
- Access to the SBAE's Curriculum Clearinghouse
- Vetting Services
- Facilitating the Implementation of a New Curriculum
- Access to SBAE's Professional Development Clearinghouse
- Change Management Services
SBAE's curriculum support services are available for free for school board members in the SBAE network, and our allied vendors can provide a discount for additional services.
These review, recommendation, and implementation programs equip reform-minded school boards with the tools needed to deliver the best curriculum possible for the students in their districts, elevating education and improving student outcomes.
